American Minks - Foods

American Minks are carnivorous animals. Staple foods include fish, mice, crayfish, clams, muskrats and frogs. American Minks also eat birds and bird nests, as well as salamanders, and snakes. Minks forage underwater.

The Mink hunts by night. Much of the Mink's prey is active at night and in cloudy weather. American Minks are capable of hunting in water or on land. When hunting in water, the American Mink spots the prey from the shore and then dives to capture it. The fact is that minks are not adapted for underwater vision.

As for hunting on land, the Mink searches for small rodents, snakes, rabbits, birds' eggs and other food under stones and tree roots. Often, the mink kills more food than it is able to eat at one time. Then, it stores the food in its den to eat it later, when hunting has not been a great success.

American Minks - Importance

Women have always been possessed by beautiful mink fur. It is interesting to know, that the female coat is more desirable than the male coat as it is considered to be less coarse.

Mink fur breeding started in 1866. Since that time, specially bred minks have been introduced to many countries. The thing is that minks tend to escape from the farms. They are known to adapt to the life in the wild quite successfully. There is an opinion that trapping is necessary to control feral American Minks population.
