American Minks - Reproduction Information
American Minks reach the age of sexual maturity at the age of ten months. During the winter, when the female mink become fertile, she mates with one or more males. The period from February to March is the time of the year Minks mate. Then, the young are born in April or May. Babies are born pink with white fur. Each newborn baby weighs approximately 8-10 grams. At the age of six weeks they are weaned. When the young reach the age of two months, minks are mature enough to be able to join their mothers on hunting expeditions.
Gestation Period - 40-75 days
Litter Size - 3-8 baby minks
American Minks - Life History
For raising their young, minks occupy abandoned burrows of animals or some naturally formed dens. Sometimes, minks find shelters under the tree roots along streams or riverbanks.
American Minks lead solitary lives. The young within one litter can be the result of fertilization by different males, as mink mate with a number of different partners. It is common with the weasel's family that reproduction takes place through delayed implantation. It means that the American mink female carries the fertilized egg for a period of 10-45 days. After that, it implants in the uterine wall and starts developing. Within 51 days the new litter is born. American Minks are carnivorous animals and normally eat everything they can kill.
